Murder at Mother's Knee

“Murder at Mother’s Knee,” submitted as “Murder Gets an A” and published in Dime Detective in October 1941, is reminiscent of “The Book that Squealed.” This time it’s a schoolteacher, and the piece of paper that implies a crime is one of her student’s essays. It’s aptly titled “Something that Happened in Our House,” another title for the story itself. Ms. Prince knows her student well and believes he witnessed a murder, but the cops can’t connect the dots. She rents herself a room at the boy’s house to investigate and ends up fighting for her life as she gets closer to the truth. This story’s only other appearance in a collection was in 1978’s Angels of Darkness.
